Moskabel locomotives were issued through two distinct eras, and various colours. Earlier Stalin era locos are recognised by cast in markings on the body side, these being Stalin's initials and the number 51 (year of introduction) and the initials of the Ministry of Electrotechnical Industries, who oversaw production. These markings were removed during the subsequent Khrushchev era. Locomotive colours known include green, blue, brown and red, in various shades.

The second green locomotive, illustrated below, is a dummy, or unpowered. Factory production, or an owner requiring a power unit or wishing to double head two locomotives? Almost certainly the latter, as an underside view shows headlight wiring without a pickup for power.
