Robert Karmann established his manufacturing business in Dusseldorf in 1914, producing plumbing and household items such as door handles, prior to relocating to Lobberich and forming Rokal GmbH in 1926. Rokal introduced their range of TT models, scale 1:120, circa 1947, continuing until the death of Robert Karmann in 1969. The business was acquired by Rowa in 1972, but, following the demise of Rowa, Roco took over, although Roco did not produce any new models.
Rokal's couplings were licenced to Arnold, for use with the Arnold Rapido range of N scale models. Rokal also engaged in joint ventures with manufacturers in what was then East Germany, including Zeuke and Wegworth and Berliner TT Bahnen (BTTB), now Tillig.
