When configured in accordance with the diagram below, the set works thus :
The train starts at the station. The station master waves his arm. The train starts and, as the train passes, the first signal changes from green to red. The second signal changes from amber to green and the third signal changes from red to amber. The station illumination dims.
The train passes over the bridge, across the first switch (turnout), with signals changing through green, amber, red as the train progresses.
The train comes around the curve, across the second switch (turnout) and across the level (grade) crossing, the barriers lowering as the train passes.
The train passes the watchman, who pops out of his hut and waves his illuminated (from below) lamp.
The illumination of the station changes from dim to bright.
The train arrives at the station, ready to repeat the cycle.
