Hornby Series Wagons

Hornby No 0, No 1 and No 50 Wagons

Banana Vans

The No 0 Banana Van was issued in LMS livery only, from 1935 until 1941, the only change occuring in 1937 when the roof colour changed from white to grey and the wording, bottom left of the body, changed from black to white.

Barrel Wagons

The Hornby Series Barrel Wagon first appeared in 1931, and continued until 1941, not reappearing after WWII. The base is always red, with a long thin chassis to 1935 before switching to a coach type base. The barrels themselves may be blue, yellow or green, later green barrels having Castrol labels. Initial wagons had two linked chains, then two chains with a central tin clip and finally one chain only.

Brake Vans

The two intial Hornby Series brake vans were produced in 1922, lettered for two pre grouping companies, GN and LNWR, before being replaced in 1924 by vans lettered for the post grouping companies, LMS and LNER, with GWR following in 1928 and SR, 1928. Post war, the four post grouping liveries were reissued before being superceded by a new British Railways livery in 1954, with a new No 50 version being available from 1957 until 1969.

Cattle Trucks

The Cattle truck was launched in plain livery, 1923, followed by LMS and LNER in 1924, GWR 1926 and SR, 1928. Reintroduced after WWII, the four post grouping liveries were issued from 1948, being replaced by British Railways in 1954, with a new No 50 wagon appearing in 1957, available until 1965.

Cement Wagons

The Cement Wagon was introduced in 1922, intially plain grey then, from 1924, lettered for both LMS and LNER, with GW in 1926 and SR two years later. The body changed from grey to red in 1930 with red bodies lettered for all four companies before being Plain (unallocated to a specific company). The body became yellow in 1937, Blue Circle Portland Cement, that livery being reintroduced following WWII, and continuing until 1957.

The Hornby Series Coal Wagon first appeared in Meccano livery in 1931, before becoming Hornby Railway Company in 1936, production continuing untl 1941. The Coal Wagon did not reappear following WWII. See also Open Wagon, below.

Crane Trucks

Crane Trucks in plain livery appeared in 1923, followed by company liveries (LMS and LNER) from 1924, GWR (1926) and SR (1928) until 1930 before reverting to plain livery, until 1941. Production continued after WWII, available through to 1969 with the No 50 Series model.

The fibre wagon, available from 1931 until 1941, but not post war, was issued in three versions, with a red, blue or black standard pre war base. The blue and black fibre wagons were also issued without buffers, as part of the M11 Complete Model Railway Set.

Flat Trucks

The Hornby Series Flat Truck appeared in 1934, continuing until 1941 then post war from 1948 until the end of Hornby production. The truck was available initially without load and with a cable drum, then with container from 1936. Reintroduced in 1948, the Flat Truck remained available until 1969.

Gas Cylinder Wagons

The Gas Cylinder Wagon first appeared in plain livery in 1923, switching to LMS and LNER liveries in 1924, adding GWR in 1926 and SR in 1928. The plain livery was used from 1930 until 1941, and again post war, from 1948, the No 50 model listed for sale from 1957 until 1969.

Gunpowder Vans

The Gunpowder Van was introduced in LNWR livery in 1922, replaced by LMS and LNER liveries in 1924 to which were added GWR livery in 1926 and SR livery in 1928. Production continued until 1941 but was not reintroduced post war.

Hopper Wagons

Introduced in plain livery in 1923 and, in 1924, wearing LMS and LNER liveries, the Hopper Wagon was subsequently issued as GWR in 1926 then SR in 1928, all four liveries continuing until production ceased in 1941. Post war, the Hopper was issued in LMS livery in 1948 then British Railways in 1954, with a No 50 British Railways version from 1957 until final withdrawal in 1969.

The Luggage Van was released in MR livery (1921-24), LMS livery (1924-41), LNER/NE livery (1924-41), GWR livery (1926-41) and SR livery (1928-41). Post war, the Luggage Van was reissued as a Goods Van from 1948 in the four pre nationalised liveries then, from 1954-57 in British Railways guise and No 50, 1957-69.

Lumber Wagons

First issued in plain livery in 1923, the Lumber Wagon appeared as LMS and L&NER in 1924, the latter being replaced by LNER in 1925 and NE during 1926. GWR livery appeared in 1926 and SR 1928 before reappearing in plain livery from 1930 until 1941. Post war, the No 1 Lumber Wagon in plain livery appeared in 1948 being replaced by the No 50 from 1957 until 1969.

The No 0 Meat Van appeared in three company liveries, GWR, LMS and LNER, but not SR, and did not reappear following WWII. LMS vans 1931-41 followed by GW and NE 1937-41. LMS vans were initially fitted with a sliding door each side although amended to fixed (printed) doors by the time the GW and NE vans were issued.

Milk Traffic Vans

The No 1 Milk Traffic Van was released in 1923, in plain livery, followed by LMS and LNER liveries in 1924, GWR in 1926 and SR, 1930, then plain livery 1930-41. The No 0 Milk Traffic Van was issued 1931-41. Following WWII, the Milk Traffic Van was issued in Southern green 1948-54, then British Railways maroon, 1954-57.

The four No 0 Open Wagons, without buffers, were produced from 1929 until 1941, in each of the four post Grouping liveries (GWR, LMS, LNER and SR). All versions wore the running number 12530, and were issued with an open base 1929-1930 then standard base, 1930-1941. Early No 0 open wagons were plain grey with company initials, the lithography having additional printed details by 1930.

Refrigerator Vans

The No 0 Refrigerator Van was issued 1937-41 in the liveries of the four pre nationalisation liveries, GWR, LMS, LNER and SR.

The No 1 Refrigerator Van first appeared in MR livery, 1923-24, followed by LMS and LNER (1924), GWR (1926) and SR (1928), continuing until 1941 and again from 1948 until 1954. British Railways livery followed (1954-57) and No 50, 1957-69.

Side Tipping Wagons

The Side Tipping Wagon first appeared in 1923, described as Tilting Wagon, in plain livery, before being described as Tipping Wagon then, Side Tipping Wagon. McAlpine and Robert Hudson liveries followed, until 1941. Post War, the wagon appeared as McAlpine in 1948, the final No 50 model being listed from 1957 until 1969.

Timber Wagons

Initially issued in plain livery (1922-24) LMS and LNER liveries followed (1924-30) together with GWR (1926-30) and SR (1928-30). Plain livery was reintroduced in 1930 and again following WWII, until withdrawal in 1959. Timber wagons carried three planks initially, reducing to two in 1934.

Wine Wagons

The Hornby Series Wine Wagon with two red barrels was introduced in 1928, production continuing until 1941. Initial models included both drain cocks and cast fillers, the fillers being deleted c1932, followed by the drain cocks in 1936.

The Hornby Series Wine Wagon with single red barrel followed in 1929 and continued until 1935.
