The first Hornby controllers were HV or High Voltage (1925-29), designed to use mains power via a 60w bulb, providing up to 60 volts to the HV Metropolitan locomotive. Next were transformers by Ferranti (1927-33), providing up to 10 volts and used to power 6v Hornby locomotives via a Resistance Controller. 4v Resistance Controllers were used with Accumulators (1926-35), to power 4v locomotives. Hornby then began manufacturing controllers 'in house', these being the well known T6 and T20 series, 1931-41, and post war.

The T20 series are probably the most seen and most popular of the Meccano Transformer/Controllers, for 20v locomotives. Approximate dating guide :


1932 introduced, dark blue case with brass scroll plate, deep blue infill
1933 case colour changed to lighter blue, rectangular brass plate, blue infill
1934 brass plate infill changed to green
1936 nameplate now aluminium, green
1937 cable changed from two core to three core. Separate earth (ground) terminal no longer fitted to rear of case. Box advises bayonet plug no longer fitted.
