Ronuk Limited

(Portslade Sussex UK)

Ronuk, makers of 'sanitary polishes', was established initially in Brighton, relocating to nearby Portslade in 1902. The company prospered, and was acquired by Newton, Chambers and Co c1960, subsequenty relocating to Sheffield. The toy train connection? The card set illustrated below builds a scale model, although the size or scale itself is not mentioned. The first and second pages refer to 'the late King George V', no mention is made of Newton, Chambers and Co and the address shown is Portslade not Sheffield, indicating some time after 1936 but prior to the 1960 takeover and subsequent relocation to Sheffield.

Why would Ronuk produce a card train set? The second page below references coupons for free gifts. Perhaps the train set was one of those free gifts, although the set is priced 6d (sixpence, or 2.5 new pence).
