Gernot Ritter began restoring older toy trains for himself during the 1970s, and began selling his restored models, which brought him to the attention of German toy maker Marklin, who requested he restore Marklin trains on their behalf. Many of the spare parts were unavailable, so Mr Ritter manufactured them himself, eventually having a sufficient range to build Ritter Restorations of classic Marklin models.
