The first item illustrated below is a Transsaharien, or Trans Saharan rail car, issued in 1949, by JF (Le Jouet Français), which became Jouef. Early models are rubber band powered, updated to a clockwork mechanism in 1952 and continuing until 1956. Body length 22cm (8.5 inches). The clockwork model, as below, is recognised by the on/off switch protruding through the roof. Early sets were supplied with tinplate rails coloured red/orange which were later changed to a grey/green colour.
