Harry Jamieson

(Preston UK)

Although companies such as GEM and Hamblings were active pre war, Harry Jamieson may claim to have introduced the first 4mm scale locomotive kit in 1946, although the term 'Loco Building Units' was preferred as several were required to form a comlete kit of parts for one model. The first Jamieson kit issued was LMS Black Five 4-6-0 tender loco in May 1946, followed by GWR County 4-6-0 tender loco July 1946, SR Lord Nelson, LMS Jubilee and LNER B2 4-6-0 tender locos October 1946.

Within two years of the launch of the kits, Harry Jamieson sold the business to Wearn Pearse and John Boynton, who relocated production to Liskeard in Cornwall. New kits were advertised from November 1947, but by 1960 John Boynton left the business and EAMES of Reading had taken over Jamieson, retaining Wearn Pearse and later his son Michael as sub contractors. The business expanded under EAMES, new kits were introduced during the 1960s although by the 70s the range had reduced. EAMES closed in March 1989, as did Jamieson, although some parts and tools were acquired by Nu-Cast.
