Alfred Carlton Gilbert, 15th February 1884 - 24th January 1961, was an American businessman, inventor, athlete, magician, and toy maker who created the range of Erector Sets and, in 1938, purchased American Flyer. Whilst best remembered for Erector Sets and, later, American Flyer S gauge trains, Gilbert produced many other products including Magic and Chemistry Sets, Microscopes and Woodworking Tools together with Polar Cub domestic appliances including Hairdryers, Fans, Kitchen Beaters (Mixers), Vacuum Cleaners, Malted Milk machines and Vibrators.
