Thomas Graham Farish formed his engineering business, Graham Farish, in 1919, producing radio components for home constructors. The company also produced other items before, in 1948, launching model railways. Formo flexible track was introduced, in 2 rail, together with train sets the following year. Formo sets, 3 rail, followed in 1953.
There were three series of locomotive, although the second series comprised one loco only. The initial series of Farish 00 locomotives comprised LMS Black Five, SR Bulleid Pacific, GWR King, GWR Prairie Tank and New York Central Hudson, the tender locomotives having a tender mounted motor with drive shaft to the loco. The second series comprised only the 3 rail Formo 0-6-0 tender loco, based on a Southern Q1 class, and the third in 1961, the more traditional GWR 94xx and 81xx class tank locos. Production of the 00 range continued through the 1970s, including goods and passenger stock, track and accessories.
The Grafar N gauge range was introduced in 1970, at the expense of 00 gauge which finally ceased production in 1981. The Graham Farish company became part of Bachmann during 2000. Thomas Graham Farish died October 1982; see obituary below.
