Gamages

Gamages. What can be said? Some of my earliest memories involve a family trip to London, before Christmas each year, to visit Gamages and their amazing toy department. The shop was in Holborn, London, and, for many years, Gamages issued an annual catalogue of mainly 'boys toys', including toy trains and model railways, die cast vehicles, chemistry sets, model aircraft and, later, slot car racing sets. The earliest example I have seen is from 1953, and the last, 1965/66. Were there others? These toy catalogues are not to be confused with the Gamages general catalogues, particularly those issued at Christmas, which dealt with all manner of items from furniture to clothing.

Gamages sold a lot of toys under their own name, at one time, although all appear to have been made by 'well known manufacturers', for sale by Gamages. I doubt that Gamages actually ever made anything themselves - they were retailers, not manufacturers.
