O S Nock 0 Gauge

(UK)

O S 'Ossie' Nock was a British railway signal engineer, best known for his many and varied railway related publications in both book and magazine article format. Further details available via Wikipedia

The model illustrated below was offered for sale with the following description :

Here is a vintage pre-war model of Great Northern Railway Stirling 2-4-0 loco no 814. The real loco was built in 1889 and withdrawn in 1927, the last of the Stirling GNR 2-4-0s, although it had been fitted with a domed boiler in 1911.

In Chapter 11 of his book 'Line Clear Ahead' (Patrick Stephens, 1982), O S Nock describes how he obtained this model in 1940 from an enthusiast acquaintance who had been called up for military service. There is also a photo of the model in the book. His own model railway was clockwork, coarse scale, so this model remained on the mantle piece.

The model is well made, from tinplate and brass, with turned brass boiler fittings and a good level of detail, including lamp irons, sprung buffers, brake gear on engine and tender. The smoke box door handles and the lubricators either side of the smoke box are missing ( the lubricators are missing in the photo in O S Nock's book). The paint finish is original, but has some scratches, chips and rust spotting in the black areas. The tender handrails have been repaired, there is part of a footstep missing from the tender front right hand side.

Wheels are cast iron, to finescale standard, not insulated, with 3 rail electrical pick up. The motor magnet is marked Bonds, and it is in working order.

This is a good quality early locomotive model with an interesting provenance, which could do with a light refurbishment.
