999 Locomotive, open pilot (cow catcher).
This image clearly illustrates the open spokes of the pilot, or cow catcher, at the front of the loco. There are four main variations of the pilot on the 999, plus various other casting differences, which are clearly indicated on Eric McFadden's excellent site. (Please see Marx front page for link).
