333 Locomotive, without smoke unit.
Note the lack of cast 'shades' above the cab windows. This lack indicates a casting for a non smoking locomotive. The casting for the smoking loco is slightly different, and has cast shades above the cab windows. Note that smoking motors will not fit non smoking bodies without modification. The reverse is also true.
The following information was posted to the Marx Yahoo! Group :
The problem with putting a 333 smoker chassis in a non smoker body is the head light. On the smoker, the light is mounted in front of the smoke unit and is part of the motor as a unit. On the non smoker, there is a separate light housing that screws to the casting in front, just behind the front boiler plate. To make enough room for the smoker motor, with the light already part of the motor assembly, it is necessary to grind off the little die-cast tab in front, that the non smoker light housing attaches to. That prevents ever being able to switch the loco back to a non smoking 333, as there will be no place to mount the light.
