Time to do something about the access hatch, in the middle of the layout. First step was to install a piece of wood to fill the hole, then plan the best use of the additional space created. The centre of the layout will contain roads, vehicles and tin buildings. The roads were planned using strips of thin card, to see how much space was available. Stage two was deciding how to create roads. The initial plan was to use ready made roads, particularly those sold by Scenic Express, but, at four inches wide, they are just a little too narrow for 0 scale vehicles, which are 1:43 scale, or thereabouts.
Plan Two involved a scenery mat, about two feet by four, textured like road, and very dark grey (almost black) in colour. This was cut to shape and size, using the card stripes which I had used for planning the roads. The result was then glued in place. Only one piece has been fixed so far, and the results are below. More next month.
