Jefferson Electric have been producing transformers since 1915 and, according to their web site, produced toy transformers between 1915 and 1920. An e-mail to their customer service department produced a polite reply, but no further information.
My understanding is that Jefferson Electric provided transformers to American Flyer, but for how long, I do not know. Until American Flyer was taken over by A C Gilbert? Some of the transformers look later than the 1920 date suggested by Jefferson Electric. Were all Jefferson Electric transformers labelled with that firm's name, or were some labelled American Flyer? Were transformers used by AF all supplied by Jefferson, or were there other suppliers? The only transformers I have seen (or noticed), marked American Flyer, are also marked A C Gilbert, so perhaps there are no transformers labelled American Flyer, without the Gilbert name too?
The pictures below were all copied from eBay sales. It does not appear that Jefferson Electric transformers are either rare or expensive.
